a new vision for christian unity

The world is sadly full of division and disagreement. Scripture reminds all Christians of both the duty and the beauty of pursuing unity in order to display the undivided nature of God, so that the world would know that He sent His Son, Jesus. As His followers, we need each other now more than ever. This is the heart of the Dear Unity vision; that oneness in the Church would flow afresh from a new yearning of the Spirit within those who resolve to glorify the Father together, side by side.

Dear Unity is a movement centred on fostering experiences and expressions of love between brothers and sisters in the Body of Christ. It is a chain reaction of ecumenical honor starting with influential figures within the global Church, designed to involve everyone from the leaders to the layperson. Let’s move as one beyond any past walls of division to embrace what unites us at our core.

championed by leaders globally

"One thing I have learned from the great Christian tradition is that we have much to learn from our 'speaking cousins.' We have to respect them with all of their many failures and blindspots, knowing that we have the same ourselves."

Prof Timothy George

-

Southern Baptist and Founding Dean, Beeson Divinity School

"Cardinal Maurice Piat the Catholic Bishop of Port Louis said of me that, 'I, the Anglican Bishop, was no more a friend but had become his brother.' Friendship in ecumenical relationships can forge genuine brotherhood if there is mutual love and respect." [Dear Unity excerpt]

Archbishop Ian Ernest

-

Personal Representative of the Archbishop of Canterbury to the Holy See

"Let us not remain prisoners of the past, in trying to determine rights and wrongs… 'The Spirit is the great remedy for the wounds of the Church and the love for the unity of Christians is the clearest sign of His presence in us today.'" [Dear Unity excerpt]

Cardinal Raniero Cantalamessa

-

Legendary Preacher to the Papal Household

"I pray that our lives would be used by God to build and encourage the body of Christ rather than criticise quickly the things we don’t fully understand… I have learned that I can love my brother or sister without even agreeing with them… This is the mark of our maturity." [Dear Unity excerpt]

Darlene Zschech

-

Singer-Songwriter and Lead Pastor, Hope Unlimited Church

"The trouble in the church is that we’re often trying to take things out of other people’s eyes before we’ve taken the plank out of our own eye… Let’s exercise our critical faculties, but let’s exercise them about ourselves and not others."

Rev Nicky Gumbel

-

Pioneer of Alpha

"In my pilgrimage for unity, I have learned some lessons, perhaps not all, but I thank God for having enlightened me to leave my 'little kingdom' and love his whole church, in its weaknesses and holiness, in its diversity and plurality, in its poverty and majesty." [Dear Unity excerpt]

Dr Norberto Saracco

-

Argentinian Theologian, Educator and Senior Pastor

"Unity is a gift already given to us to appropriate in Christ. Unity is not uniformity… A broken and suffering world is in need of Christians working together towards reconciliation, justice and peace." [Dear Unity excerpt]

Rev Prof Dr Jerry Pillay

-

General Secretary, World Council of Churches

"I have been guilty of being the eye that said to the hand 'I have no need of you.' God has shown me the error of my ways. I am asking your forgiveness and saying to everyone who depends on the shed blood of Christ, 'I need you.'" [Dear Unity excerpt]

Francis Chan

-

Pastor and New York Times bestselling author

"The vast majority of the past two-thousand years have been marked by disagreement, discord and a lack of Christlikeness. We know that these things break the heart of God, so how much more will unity bless the name and heart of the One God who is Father of us all." [Dear Unity excerpt]

General Brian Peddle

-

21st General of the International Salvation Army

"Dear Father, in this time of great shaking, allow us to love through all our pain until fear melts away. Forgive me for all the times when I have not seen Your sons and daughters as You see them. Rip the judgement from my heart." [Dear Unity excerpt]

Dr Heidi Baker

-

Founder, IRIS Ministries

"Because we are made in the image of the Persons of the Trinity, who live in an eternal exchange of self-giving love, we are meant to become a gift to others and receive the gift of others in a mutually enriching communion of persons. This is the basis of… unity in the church." [Dear Unity excerpt]

Dr Christopher West

-

Theology of the Body Institute

"A great joy for us is that the common prayer always brings us together again. When tensions arise, the common prayer is the greatest of gifts allowing us to find the path of forgiveness and peace of heart, so essential for us who wish to be a parable of communion." [Dear Unity excerpt]

Brother Alois Leser

-

Former Prior, The Taizé Community

"The historic reconciliation between the Roman Catholic Church and the Lutheran Communion has had profound significance for global ecumenism. What we have achieved in the last decades… will lead to further breakthroughs of an ecumenical spring." [Dear Unity excerpt]

Bishop Munib Younan

-

Former President, Lutheran World Foundation

"The better we get to know one another, no matter how different our backgrounds, the more we recognise similarities between us. The Christ in me warms to the Christ in the other. The closer we draw to the centre of our faith lives, the closer we draw to each other." [Dear Unity excerpt]

Sr Mercy Shumbamhini CJ

-

Congregation of Jesus

"It is the blessedness, the surety, the magnanimity of God’s kingdom that allows us to see the good, the chosen-ness, the holiness and the sent-ness of our sisters and brothers of other denominations… What separates us is minuscule compared to that which binds us." [Dear Unity excerpt]

Bishop Todd Hunter

-

Bishop of the Anglican Church in North America

"If our unity is based on intellectual agreement, then as soon as we disagree, someone has to leave… When we can hear something we disagree with and instead of attacking one another, turn to the face of Jesus for understanding, we can show the world an example of unity they’re longing for." [Dear Unity excerpt]

Bill Johnson

-

Senior Pastor, Bethel Church

"Like Jesus, we need to die to ourselves. Unity comes with a very high cost. Unity comes from death. Someone has to die. Will you be that someone? Will you die to your pride? Your self-righteousness, Your judgemental attitude? Your bias?" [Dear Unity excerpt]

Bo Sanchez

-

Minister, Catholic Lay Preacher and Best Selling Author

"Clearly, what unites Christians at the deepest level is not doctrine, but Christ, with whom we are one through baptism… The waters of baptism do not wash away difference. Instead, they cleanse difference and prepare it for sanctification." [Dear Unity excerpt]

Rev Prof Edgardo Colón-Emeric

-

World Methodist Council

"Whenever I am with you, my beloved Evangelicals and Charismatic Protestants, my heart is touched in a deeper way by the love of the Father… and you’ve stirred my heart with the simplicity and intensity of your love for Jesus." [Dear Unity excerpt]

Dr Mary Healy

-

Catholic Professor of Sacred Scripture

"Let us build one another up in the Faith, in our lives, and in our ministries. Let us not condemn, cancel, or act cruel toward others. Let us go out of our way to know, support, encourage, and pray for other followers of Jesus." [Dear Unity excerpt]

Archbishop Dr Foley Beach

-

Primate, Anglican Church in North America

"It is evident that the most urgent and relevant question for the future of the ecumenical movement is the reconciliation of Christians – both the reconciliation of the Churches among themselves and the reconciliation within each ecclesial family." [Dear Unity excerpt]

Archibishop Job of Pisidia

-

Metropolitan Head, Eastern Orthodox Church

"I believe God experiences joy and loves seeing the different Church family members behave in loving and honoring ways towards each other. He is grieved when we attack, dishonor, and hurt other members of the Church family." [Dear Unity excerpt]

Dr Randy Clark

-

President Global Awakening

"I believe ecumenism is an experience where we are invited to this house of mirrors. Christ invites us to these rooms of mirrors where we start to see ourselves through the image of the other. Then we will never look at ourselves the same without the image of others." [Dear Unity excerpt]

Rev Najla Kassab

-

President, World Communion of Reformed Churches

"On my journey of learning to love well, I realised that love is the language that blind eyes can see and deaf ears can hear… I have seen it bridge divides… When the world sees that kind of love among God’s people, it pays attention." [Dear Unity excerpt]

Leif Hetland

-

Founder and President, Global Mission Awareness

"Please forgive me dear Pentecostal brothers and sisters for the times I have wrongly judged you or dismissed your joyful exuberance in the Lord as superficial. I now believe such joy and praise are true signs of the presence of the Holy Spirit." [Dear Unity excerpt]

Archbishop Christopher Prowse

-

Catholic Archbishop of Canberra & Goulburn

"The belief and practices of our various traditions really do matter… Differences of theology and practice may necessitate different ecclesiastical bodies. Yet even though these differences might prevent an 'external union', they should not prevent a 'union in affection.'" [Dear Unity excerpt]

Rev Dr David Watson

-

Elder, Global Methodist Church

How good and pleasant it is when God's people live together in unity! ... For there the Lord bestows his blessing, even life forevermore.

[ Psalms 133:1-3 ]

The Dear Unity book is coming soon! Showcasing the rich diversity of almost thirty global church leaders from a range of Christian backgrounds, the book will be a powerful compilation of personal reflections, teachings, backstories and cross-denominational letters set to bring a whole new perspective on the way we view our fellow believers.

This book is destined to set in motion a culture of honor within the Church that we hope will become an unstoppable force for times ahead. Perspectives will be broadened and hearts softened as each story within the pages of Dear Unity serves to animate our understanding of God's vision for Christian unity and empowers us to put this into practice within our every day.

Unity Meals are powerful acts of radical hospitality. Just as Jesus modelled to us in Scripture, remarkable things happen when Christians put aside their differences and join each other around the dinner table for a shared experience. Let’s make a habit of dining together and giving thanks, under the blessing of one roof.

"Jesus' mission was to seek and save the lost and His method was to eat and drink with people. Jesus saved people one meal at a time!" - John Mark Comer
Future Unity Meals will take place in cities across the globe, hosted in family homes under an umbrella of love, creating opportunities for greater listening, learning and celebration. Premiering on Pentecost Sunday, watch the first Unity Meal in action, hosted in Sydney Australia at the home of Philip and Jennie Ryall.

Philip Ryall is an Australian Christian entrepreneur, husband, father, and the curator of Dear Unity. From his youngest years as a committed Catholic, Phil developed a passionate conviction to build bridges of affectionate unity between the many expressions of the Christian faith. Phil’s heart today is deeply attuned to collaborative ecumenism, believing that the world is transformed when we make bold gestures of love towards each other for the sake of unity and embrace the beauty of our reconciled diversity as members of the one Body of Christ.

"Our search for unity together is in fact a search for Jesus hidden within our fellow believer. If we find him there, we will find family and come to recognise that my Father is their Father too!" - Philip Ryall
Phil upholds numerous business, leadership, training and pastoral roles and, together with his wife Jennie, serve to build up the vibrancy of the Church by means of the grace of the Holy Spirit. Inspired by the early mission trips of their two sons to the Philippines, Phil and Jennie have purchased land and established a Mission Foundation in the most impoverished region of Manila where they plan to begin an entrepreneurial college to build up the Godly identity and purpose of the talented local Christian youth.
